Understanding EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help people process and heal from traumatic or distressing events. Developed by Dr Francine Shapiro, EMDR has been used around the world for more than 30 years and is widely recognised for its effectiveness in reducing symptoms of trauma, PTSD, anxiety and emotional distress.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on activating the brain’s natural healing processes. When something overwhelming happens, the brain can struggle to fully process the experience. EMDR helps “unstick” these memories so they no longer trigger intense emotional or physical reactions.
How Does EMDR Work?
EMDR uses a structured eight-phase approach:
History Taking – your therapist gathers information about your symptoms and past events.
Preparation – learning grounding skills, emotional regulation, and what to expect.
Assessment – identifying the target memories and beliefs you want to change.
Desensitisation – processing the memory using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping or sounds).
Installation – strengthening positive beliefs to replace old, negative ones.
Body Scan – noticing and releasing physical tension linked to the event.
Closure – ensuring you feel grounded at the end of each session.
Re-evaluation – reviewing progress in each following session.
This structured approach allows you to process distress safely and at your own pace.
What Can EMDR Help With?
EMDR is effective for:
PTSD and trauma
Childhood abuse
Anxiety and panic
Depression
Grief and loss
Phobias
Stress and emotional overwhelm
Medical trauma
Relationship trauma
If a difficult memory still feels “alive” — EMDR may help you reprocess it.
Is EMDR Right for You?
EMDR may be suitable if you struggle with intrusive memories, flashbacks, or emotional triggers linked to past events. Many people experience significant improvement after just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term work with a therapist.
Final Thoughts
EMDR is a powerful, evidence-based therapy that continues to transform lives. By helping the brain complete its natural healing process, EMDR supports people in feeling calmer, more grounded and more in control of their lives.
